Preisner
is Poland’s leading film music composer whose scores for Kieslowski’s
films The Double Life of Veronique and the Three Colours
films have brought him international acclaim. It was Kieslowski’s
death that inspired him to write Requiem for my Friend, an extremely
moving farewell to his collaborator and friend, and Life, a positive
affirmation of courage and hope.
The work is given its British premiere with the BBC Concert Orchestra
under Jacek Kaspszyk with a group of Preisner’s close collaborators including
Polish soprano Elzbieta Towarnicka whose four octave vocal range is also
heard in his film scores being performed after the interval.
The concert is atmospheric using a range of instruments which continually
add colour to the symphonic score. (cymbalom, alto sax, recorder, critalles,
etc.) The singers are terrific especially the sopranos.
